Let’s cut to the chase: on a dark, icy Oklahoma overpass, 19 vehicles — nineteen — turned a routine Sunday drive into a real-life Mad Max: Winter Edition, and now an insurance company is chasing a trucker named Singh Budhpheet for $24,729.52 like he’s the sole architect of the apocalypse. Spoiler: he probably wasn’t.

So who are these people? Well, on one side, we’ve got Progressive Premier Insurance Company of Illinois, which sounds like a law firm but is actually a faceless corporate entity whose entire job is to pay money reluctantly and then spend twice as much trying to get it back. On the other side is Singh Budhpheet, a 28-year-old commercial truck driver from Elk Grove, California, operating a red Peterbilt 579 under his business, Kandola Trans Inc. He’s not a villain. He’s not a hero. He’s just a guy who was on I-40 West near the I-35 junction on November 26, 2023, when Mother Nature said, “Hold my frozen beer.”

That night, Oklahoma was a slippery nightmare. Freezing rain glazed the roads. Visibility was low. And the overpass where this all went down? It was curved left, sloped downhill, and coated in ice — basically a highway-sized waterslide for grown-ups who didn’t read the weather report. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol report says it plainly: “All units were traveling too fast for the roadway conditions.” That’s legalese for “everyone was kinda driving like an idiot,” not just Budhpheet.

But here’s what actually happened: in the chaos, vehicles began losing control. One slammed into the concrete barrier. Another jackknifed. A third plowed into a parked motor vehicle. There were multiple collisions, multiple impact zones, and so many spinning trucks it probably looked like a demolition derby choreographed by Mother Nature herself. Nineteen vehicles. Six commercial trucks. Three injuries (all minor, thank goodness). And not a single traffic signal or stop sign in sight — just a deadly curve, ice, and momentum.

Among the wreckage was William Tyler of Lavonia, Georgia, driving a 2016 Ram 2500. His truck? Totalled. His insurer, Progressive, paid him $32,113.36 to settle the claim — no deductible, full value, goodbye, good luck. But insurance companies don’t just write big checks and walk away whistling. Oh no. They have a sacred doctrine: “If someone else is at fault, we want our money back.” This is called subrogation, and it’s basically corporate vengeance with paperwork.

So Progressive turned to the police report. And there, in Unit 3, was Singh Budhpheet, listed as driving the Peterbilt that contributed to the pileup. The report cites “unsafe speed for ice or snow” and “negotiating a curve” — which, again, applied to everyone out there. But Progressive isn’t suing 19 people. They’re suing one: Budhpheet. Why him? Maybe his truck was first to jackknife. Maybe his skid marks were longer. Or maybe — and hear us out — he was just the easiest target with a valid license, a registered business, and an insurance policy that wasn’t expired or written in crayon.

Now, here’s the twist: Progressive isn’t asking for the full $32,113.36 they paid Tyler. They’re suing for $24,729.52 — about 77% of the total. Why? Because after Tyler’s truck was written off, Progressive sold it for salvage through Insurance Auto Auctions. The Ram fetched $8,650. After fees, storage, and a $150 “advance tow” charge (because even towing has add-ons now), Progressive netted $7,883.84. So their actual loss? Around $24,229.52 — suspiciously close to the amount they’re demanding. Add a few bucks for legal snacks, and boom: $24,729.52.

Is that a lot of money? For a single trucker, absolutely. That’s two months’ rent in most cities. A down payment on a decent used rig. Or, you know, 24,729.52 reasons to regret driving through Oklahoma in November.

But here’s our take: this whole case reeks of insurance theater. Progressive paid their guy, did their due diligence, and now they’re playing legal whack-a-mole with the most convenient defendant in a multi-vehicle, weather-induced disaster. Singh Budhpheet may have been going too fast. So was everyone else. So was the guy in the 2001 Mercury Grand Marquis. So was the dude in the 2012 Hyundai Genesis. But Progressive didn’t sue them. They sued the commercial driver — the one with deeper pockets, a registered carrier, and a paper trail.

And look, we get it. Insurance companies have to draw lines. But in a crash where nineteen vehicles collided on an icy curve, pinning the whole thing on one guy feels less like justice and more like corporate triage. If we’re being honest, the real defendant here should be Winter 2023. Or maybe the Oklahoma Department of Transportation for not salting the overpass. Or the universe for inventing freezing rain.

We’re not rooting for Budhpheet because he’s innocent. We’re rooting for him because none of us are safe from being the designated fall guy in someone else’s insurance spreadsheet. And if you think this couldn’t happen to you, ask yourself: were you driving within 500 feet of a jackknifing semi during a winter storm? Because in the eyes of an adjuster, that might be enough.

That Plaintiff is a CORPORATION organized and existing under the laws of OHIO. 2. The cause of action herein accrued under the laws of the State of Oklahoma; the Defendant resides in or may be found in OKLAHOMA County, Oklahoma and within the venue of this court. In the alternative, the facts giving rise to the cause of action as stated herein occurred in OKLAHOMA County, Oklahoma and within the venue of this Court. 3. Failure to exercise the highest degree of care while operating a motor vehicle. b. Failure to maintain lane responsibility. c. Failure to maintain a safe driving distance. d. Failure to yield and/or obey traffic signs or signals. e. Driver inattention f. Failure to keep a proper lookout. g. Careless and/or prohibited driving. 7. That prior to the loss set forth above, Plaintiff had issued to Insured a policy of insurance in which Plaintiff agreed to indemnify Insured against loss or damage to the described property. 8. That by reason of the legal liability imposed on Plaintiff by the policy, Plaintiff was obligated to pay, and did pay to or for the benefit of Insured, the amount of $24,729.52, for damages arising from Defendant’s negligence, as evidenced by the documents attached hereto. 9. That Insured, pursuant to the subrogation provisions of his or her policy, assigned to plaintiff all rights of Insured to recover the amount of loss so paid under the policy and caused by the negligence of Defendant. 10. Pursuant to the SCRA §201(b)(4), Plaintiff declares under penalty of perjury that Defendant SINGH BUDHPREET is/are not in the Armed Forces for the United States, verified on 10/02/2025 via the U.S. Department of Defense website.
